Education

I have a BA in English from Rice University. I attended college from 1999 to 2003. I left before completion for the working world, and eventually became a professional poker player for a number of years, including side gigs writing about poker and offering poker coaching services. In 2013 I returned to undergraduate to complete my final credit-hours, earning a 4.0 for the year, and I officially graduated in 2014.

Experience

I played poker for a living for a period in my twenties, and for several years ran a small tournament poker coaching service. I consistently improved my student's results through personalized one-on-one instruction. I offered active discussions during tournaments of my thought processes and what I observed at the table, as well as hand history reviews where I critiqued my student's play in a previous tournament. Through this I identified my student's strengths and weaknesses, and offered suggestions based in my own experience about where my student could improve, and how my student should think differently about situations. My enjoyment of and the fulfillment I got from poker coaching led me to consider academic tutoring as a potential career. Although I did some tutoring as an undergraduate, I am relatively new to it on the whole. While my rates reflect that, I believe my experience as a poker coach proves my caliber as an instructor and makes me a very good value for what I charge. I can tutor a variety of subjects but specialize in writing. Beyond the multiple creative writing workshop classes I completed as an undergraduate, in my professional life I regularly wrote for the Houston Press for two years, and I have been published in the Houston Chronicle. Aside from writing, math and English literature are my two strongest subjects. SAT - 1550 ACT - 34

Hobbies

I'm a huge comedy fan. In my spare time I perform standup at open mics in my neighborhood. I also enjoy watching standup performances and television comedies. I sing and play guitar in my spare time and occasionally record music. I also write both creatively and with the intent of getting published as a freelance writer for features, opinions, and journalism. I like to relax by watching TV or playing games-- card games or classic video games are usually my favorites. Though I do appreciate the rich food culture in Houston (a subject I wrote on for the Press), I also enjoy cooking in my own kitchen quite a bit.
