Education

My undergrad degree (BFA) is in education from the University of Illinois. My GPA was 3.12/4. I specialized in art and also earned a minor in English and American literature. I paid my way with two scholarships, a job teaching pottery classes for the Urbana Park District, and a midnight-to 8:30 AM job at Kraft Foods. I studied for my M.A. at Illinois State University and earned a 3.76/4 GPA. I returned to the University of Illinois for my Ed.D., which I received in 1988, earning a 3.82/4 GPA. I paid my way with a Fellowship, a tuition and fee waiver, and teaching assistantships from the School of Art and the Department of English. While working on my doctorate, I entered a short story in the university-wide Graduate Student Fiction Writing Contest, and won first place. I also worked as an English teacher in the university's Upward Bound program.

Experience

My first job in my chosen profession was teaching 8th grade English half-time, and K-12 art half time. I did this for ten years before going to graduate school for my masters and doctoral degrees. I became an education professor at the University of Houston, where I taught for ten years. Then I became art education faculty at Texas Tech University in Lubbock. I have returned to Houston and now teach sixth and seventh grade social studies at the Awty International School. I was named Texas Art Teacher of the Year in 1999, and Western U.S. Art Teacher of the Year in 2000. I am a natural teacher, and I look forward to my tutoring jobs with University Tutor.

Hobbies

I am an exhibiting artist. You can view my work online at my website: www.dennisearlfehr.com or on my Facebook art page. (Go to Facebook and search for Dennis Fehr's art.) I specialize in portraits. I have a beautiful art studio behind my house. It takes me 15 seconds to walk to work. My wife Mary and I have six children, two of whom are teachers. We have a dog named Cooper, and two cats: Chino and Merlin. We love to travel, and have visited over 20 countries. I recently started teaching myself to speak French. I've been doing it for about three weeks, and know about 400 words. With French, however, there is also the matter of accents and pronunciation of vowels. The r's are tricky, and the letter e is written or pronounced about fifteen ways! Je ne parle pas bien le français (I don't speak French very well), but I am enjoying my fast progress. I also speak enough Spanish to get by--usually. I started playing drums in sixth grade and have played in bands professionally for years. I love it. Drums are pretty loud though. I don't want to disturb my neighbors, so I always check with them about what times it's okay to practice.
