Bowdoin College - B.A., History
I am experienced at teaching English and various aspects of learning, reading, and writing in the language. Other subjects include history, government, French, social studies, and test prep. I feel making English more relevant helps students to learn it. A student better internalizes their learning if they feel like they own their learning process. I can do this by providing guided discovery and engaging in constant dialog with my students. I've taught in Russia for a year and a half. In class a few months ago, I realized the book we were discussing was not engaging my Muscovite students. I decided to recite lyrics to a song, "Thrift Shop," instead. The young students liked American music so I brought in the song and we spent much of the class time discussing it. In the next class, students were requesting Miley Cyrus songs and even ones by 50 Cent!I attended Bowdoin College where I earned a Bachelor of Arts in History and International Relations, and before that went to St John's School in Houston. Although I have a strong personal interest in my degree subjects, I also spend my free time trying new foods and cooking, playing soccer, and cycling.
