In 1965, I received a BS in Education with a major in English from The University of Houston. My GPA was a 3 pt. I have a permanent Texas Teacher's certificate and a Texas ESL Certification. My credentials are listed on the TEA website for those with access. I can provide copies as well. My college degrees, ESL certification and communication skills qualify me to work with our international community, and help students improve their pronunciation, reading, grammar and essay writing. My fee is $35 per hour, depending on number of hours per week. Editing/proofreading fees vary.
Experience
With a BS in Education from The University of Houston in 1965, a major in English, and an ESL certification, I can assist students in achieving a greater proficiency in reading, writing and speaking. In the last two years, most of my work has been with adult international professionals, helping them speak and write better English, though I love working with students grades 4-college, as well. I have assisted many college students with their essays. I have helped students with preparation for the SAT, particularly writing. Also, I have enjoyed seeing tremendous progress in improvement in speaking English for Asian, Middle Eastern and European students. In 1990, I taught ESL in Cairo, Egypt, at a Copt seminary, and feel that I learned as much (culturally speaking) from the students as they did from me. With the increase of adult multi-national residents in Houston,and the importance of their gaining English proficiency, my skills and desire to inspire are a plus. Most of my expertise in writing magazine articles and web content does come from my business background, but I also have experience with elementary school children as I was a 5th Grade teacher for several years. One of my specialties is teaching reading comprehension skills.
