Education

I graduated magna cum laude from Emory University in 2019 with a BS in Biology and a 3.9 GPA. I have tutored students part-time for two years in biology, chemistry, math, ESL, and academic writing. My ultimate goals as a tutor are to not only help my students achieve their academic goals but also critically think about concepts so that they will be well-equipped to approach more challenging problems. While learning is very rarely a straightforward process, the emotional payoff from mastering a concept is incredibly rewarding and is something that I strive to inspire in everyone that I work with.

Experience

I have a semester's worth of experience teaching students as a Supplemental Instructor in Advanced Genetics, where I worked closely with my professor to create my own presentations, handouts, and practice exams for students that reflected the content and difficulty of the class. I received the Biology Faculty Award in 2017 from Oxford College of Emory University for my contributions in teaching. In addition to this, I have also helped students with their biology writing assignments when I worked as a writing tutor for two semesters. Having had two years of experience in cancer research, including my honors thesis which involved an oral defense of my research project and a written thesis, I am skilled at teaching students how to think and communicate scientifically. I have also received ESL training and have experience in teaching English to refugees. For nine months I worked with adults one-on-one who started at varying levels of English ability from learning the alphabet to needing practice with conversations. I have also taught English to children at a school for refugees for a semester, where I volunteered as a Guided Reading Tutor. Students read books to me based on their English ability, and I evaluated their pronunciation as well as their comprehension of the story by asking questions and engaging in discussion about book topics. I place an emphasis on making my sessions as interactive and concrete as possible, as I find this method to be most helpful to my students. While my specialties are in biology, writing, and ESL, I also have experience tutoring high school and college-level chemistry and math in person and via different online tutoring platforms and have received many positive reviews from my students. I have taken and received A's in college level general chemistry I/II, organic chemistry I/II, and calculus I/II. I am more than happy to incorporate any additional resources into my teaching, and I'm always willing to hear any feedback. If provided with review materials, homework, or problem sets at least 48 hours before our session, I am also able to write out detailed, explanation-rich answers to share with students to review after our session. Please contact me with any questions you may have, and I look forward to helping you!

Hobbies

In addition to my academic interests, my hobbies include singing, writing, drawing, playing tennis, and reading. I attended the High School for Performing and Visual Arts, where I specialized in vocal music. While I am currently pursuing a career in medicine, the arts, especially vocal music, is still an essential part of my life.
