Experience
As a tutor, I do not want to push my students past their mental and emotional limits; instead, I set clear goals for my students, and I work with them to learn their learning style. I want to challenge my students, but not to the point of burn-out; I want them to be intellectually stimulated, but not frustrated. I make a point of getting to know them by letting them talk about their day for a few minutes at the beginning of each session. I also pay attention to my students when they listen to me talk because how they pay attention can be a gauge for their learning style. For example, if I use my hands when I talk, visual learners will often watch my hand motions. Verbal learners, however, will write down what I say, rather than look at my face. After I listen to my students' personal concerns and lives, I begin the tutoring session by reviewing fundamentals to make sure they keep the foundation of their subject in mind. I focus particularly on chemistry as a tutor, and I try to connect my students' personal interests to the subject to make it easier to understand. When their tutoring sessions are over, my students should have learned not just chemistry, but also pattern recognition and problem-solving.
