Hobbies

I am an enormous people's person; I currently work for the YMCA international services doing refugee resettlement. My work deals mainly with Iraqi refugees; I use my dual knowledge of Arabic language and culture and American language and culture to aid refugees in their transition to a new life in the U.S. I am an avid backpacker and hiker; I recently completed a 120 mile solo stretch of the Pacific Crest Trail in Southern Oregon. I am a stark believer in community and the powers of sheer positivity in the toppling of even the most formidable obstacles. On the long run, I see myself becoming an international teacher, hopefully with a focus on science (chemistry) and language instruction. I studied Philosophy in college, although I dislike to define myself through appeal to a single major, as during my college career I studied German (three years), Chemistry (2 years) and Physics (2 years) alongside my Philosophy courses. I like to think of myself as an individual committed to knowledge for knowledge's sake, education for the sake of the beauty of education itself. I hold that such an approach produces a more robust student than an approach that treats education as merely a means to an end (typically employment). I consider myself eternally grateful to have had parents who valued education before all else. They never purchased me nice clothing or shiny birthday presents, but they made sure I received a vibrant, wholesome, education.
