Experience

MCAT: 33; CR:11 BS:12 PS:10 SAT: 2140; CR:710 M:730 W:700 I have extensive tutoring experience across a wide age range. I had my first introduction to tutoring while in high school where I worked for "A+ Tutoring" in Laredo, Texas. There, I was assigned a 5 year old boy, 12 year old girl and two high school juniors. With the youngest, I covered "Letter and number recognition" while polishing his verbal English speaking and comprehension using children's books. I covered Algebra I with the 12 year old as she needed most help learning the "Order of Operations" and basic fraction mathematics. With her, I made math very visual using mobile blocks with numbers printed on them and a whiteboard I had bought her to demonstrate how the numerators and denominators can "move" when multiplying fractions. My high school juniors needed much help with inorganic chemistry and biology. We covered scientific notation to the proper use of conversion factors to stoichiometry. I worked 10-12hrs a week (including weekends). While at Brown University for my undergraduate and master's work, I tutored other college students in Biology, Anatomy and Physiology, General Chemistry and Organic Chemistry. Because of my own scholastic schedule, I only worked around 6hrs/week but did so for two full academic years (Junior and Senior year). Most recently, I've tutored a set of brothers (7 and 9 years old) and have covered all of the taught concepts in their 1st and 3rd grade classes, respectively. Over the past year with them, I felt I have greatly refined my tutoring approach to incorporate much enthusiasm, energy, active involvement, encouragement and positive reinforcement when covering concepts. I manage these two students simultaneously where before I had exclusively done 1-on-1 tutoring.

Hobbies

I enjoy exercising, kayaking, watching the Rockets and Astros win (losing, less so). I prefer a quiet space to a crowded environment but would consider myself a "people-person." I am comfortable in my own skin but rarely satisfied with where I am in my career. I am currently conducting Clinical Research in the Neurosurgery Department of Memorial Hermann while I apply to medical school.
