Experience

I have a Ph.D. degree from Rice University with background in math and computer science. I am now an independent investment advisor. Before this, I was a financial advisor. Before that, I was an assistant professor. Even before that? I was studying at Rice University. I love teaching. Being able to explain math in a way that most people can understand is so rewarding to me! To some people, math is hard or scary and the step-by-step reasoning seems like a magic show. It does not have to be this way! In fact, understanding the fundamental concepts and getting a clear big picture will help the students a lot. For example, when I tell tutees that logarithm is just taking the exponents, some will stare at me with disbelief and shock. Then after trying some simple examples, they can actually appreciate the logarithmic operations. As a tutor, I have found that many times, the small tips and tricks can shed light to the tutees. Then many things can turn out to be bright as if a new window has just opened. Going from the initial frustration to the enlightening “click” in their mind, the tutees become excited and the subsequent homework/test will not seem to be a daunting mountain any more. I have two daughters, one in elementary school and one in middle school. As they grow older, I become very interested in helping them learn faster and more efficiently. I wrote a computer program "DearBank" so that they can deposit (or withdraw) their allowance money into this bank and enjoy a much higher interest rate (for example, 3 percent per month!). Inside this program, they use algebra and calculus to handle banking and also play the stock market game. Math can be fun and easier to learn than you think, if you know how to explore that amazing world from an appropriate angle! Please call me at 832-423-6139 if you have any questions. Thanks!
