I have over five years of experience tutoring in both school and private settings with proven results. My past experience includes participating in a pilot tutoring program called Advancement Via Individual Determination (AVID) at the Worcester Technical High School in Worcester, MA. The focus of the program was to better prepare high school students for college level courses and increase the number of students who enroll in four year universities.
Through my 5+ years of tutoring, I have developed an effective style that places emphasis on students arriving to solutions on their own. Rather than simply providing students with answers, like many instructors tend to do, I engage the students in the learning process by "guiding through questioning." I try my best to answer a student's question with another question to avoid handing out answers. Only if the students answer my questions correctly do I feel confident they have mastered a concept. In the end, this tutoring style better prepares the student to handle increasingly difficult math and chemistry concepts.
In cases when students need more help understanding a concept or principle, I will guide the students through an example problem and then give them the opportunity demonstrate their understanding of the concept on a different problem.
I realize that many students have different learning styles. Since some students are visual learners and others follow by example, I adapt my tutoring style to fit the needs and learning preferences of the student. From high school mathematics and science to college level calculus and chemistry, my students will see their grades rise from failing to above average.
HobbiesIn my spare time I enjoy reading, listening to music, watching movies, and playing guitar. I was originally born in Houston, but spent my childhood in the Caribbean.
I support education initiatives that will increase the number of high school students who enroll in four year colleges. I am also an advocate for resources that improve the quality of education and make it more accessible, particularly Khan Academy, edX, and MIT Open Courseware.

Matthew is great! He sat down and clearly explained things to my daughter, and allowed her to work problems on my own to ensure her understanding. He is very punctual, extremely kind and patient, and my daughters understanding of Precalculus has increased.
Very helpful and professional! Matthew was always on time and I highly recommend him! Great guy, 5 stars! Thanks Matthew!
